Poker versus Blackjack
Posted By Diego | Poker-Vips News | July 21, 2009, 05:24 AM |

Of all the casino game players, poker players are probably closest to blackjack players in similarity. While poker players sometimes play games like craps or roulette recreationally, they usually understand that these games are not beatable and do not approach them with the kind of intensity that they approach poker. Blackjack is different. With the right methods, a blackjack player can beat the House. Most people who play blackjack do not, of course, but the fact that there are skills that make it possible is appealing to many poker players.
Poker Vs. Blackjack -- Similarities
Both poker and blackjack require a good understanding of the basic strategies of the game. If you don’t know the basics, you will amass losses quickly in either game. Furthermore, both games have advanced strategies that when implemented can result in a player being a consistent winner at the game. Finally, both games have an element of luck that can be deceptive, leading players to believe that they are not responsible for their losses.
Poker Vs. Blackjack -- Distinctions
Blackjack is a game played against the House, rather than other players. The reality is that it is much more difficult to win money consistently at blackjack than at poker for a number of reasons. For one, basic strategy is not enough. Correct use of basic strategy will only get you to a point in which you are losing a little more than half the time, regardless of what stakes you play or who the dealer is. In poker, if you are facing unskilled opponents, even a basic understanding of the game can pay dividends. Furthermore, the casino takes steps to thwart blackjack players. Shoes are filled with eight decks and reshuffled early in order to thwart card counters. Casino cameras look out for those who might be playing as a team, or those who have a reputation for being able to beat the game. In contrast, good poker players are, if not welcomed to the casino, at least ignored, since a successful poker player has no effect on the casino’s profits.
Playing Poker or Blackjack
You will have to decide for yourself which game will be more profitable for you to play.
However, you should note that while a number of professional blackjack players have become professional poker players, very few, if any, known instances of professional poker players switching to blackjack.
